In-vitro fertilization (IVF)

The first step of an IVF-treatment is the hormonal stimulation to gain an adequate number of mature oocytes, which are then removed from the ovaries by transvaginal puncture and fertilized by sperm in the laboratory. 2 – 5 days after fertilization, the embryos are implanted in the uterus or the intact fallopian tube (embryo transfer).

The stimulation therapy can lead to a significant enlargement of the ovaries, which may cause discomfort. However, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which requires hospital treatment, is a rare complication.

Fertilisation outside the body is recommended in the following cases:

  • functional disorders of the fallopian tubes
  • decreased sperm capacity
  • endometriosis
  • unexplained infertility
  • PCO syndrom

In an IVF-Naturelle treatment the extracorporal fertilization takes place during the natural menstrual cycle, without using any hormonal stimulation. The advantage of a "natural" IVF-treatment is that the oocyte has undergone the natural selection process and is therefore best for fertilization and implantation.

Treatment process

With IVF-Naturelle, the first consultation takes place on the 9th to 12th day of the cycle, depending on the cycle length. An ultrasound and blood test are performed during this consultation. Based on the blood tests results, the time of ovulation can usually be predicted on this day, and a second consultation is no longer necessary.

Patients who live further away can have an ultrasound and blood tests performed in their own local obstetrician and gynaecologist’s practice and send the result by e-mail. The blood levels should be available by the afternoon of the day on which the ultrasound was performed. Consequently, patients who live several hours away can also be treated.

If necessary, various steps can be taken to better control ovulation.

Are there any risks or side effects of in vitro fertilitsation?

As with any medical procedure, in vitro fertilisation involves certain risks. Complications are rare – but they can be quite serious in individual cases. For example, the hormone treatment can sometimes have side effects – such as hyperstimulation syndrome. This can cause abdominal pain, nausea or shortness of breath, for example, and the risk of an ectopic pregnancy is slightly increased. When the eggs are removed, it is possible that organs may be accidentally injured, and even anaesthesia is never without risk. The physician treating you will be able to provide you with detailed information on the opportunities and risks of treatment, explain the course of treatment to you and discuss the possibility of a multiple pregnancy.
